2012 The Longest Day – 15h 36m 54s over in a flash

From sunrise… to sunset.

15 hours. 36 minutes. And 54 seconds.

I didn’t know what to expect when we signed up to form a team to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day event. With only a few weeks to prepare, Cliff and I scrambled, called some friends, found a launch site, designed banners, printed some t-shirts, and coordinated 11 shifts and 2 routes for bikers, runners, and walkers (and scooters!). Team Life-Cycle was born.

The day came and the weather wasn’t great. We set up our checkpoint at 4:30 am on Lake Street in Wayzata. (Thanks to Jim Koch for letting us use his building!) The first group showed up and ready to ride at 5:30 am.

The weather cooperated for another hour or so then poured down on us. In fact, we got drenched multiple times throughout the day. It got so bad at times, we couldn’t see 10 ft in front of us as we were riding. But we kept going.

The 6:30 pm Ride Group

There was something special about that day.
Some rode hard because they deeply believed in the cause.
Others did it trying to achieve a personal goal.
Some even did it just because their friend asked them to.

For me, it was all of the above.
Yeah, my dad could be potentially showing early symptoms of dementia.
Yeah, I rode 106 miles throughout the day (my personal record).
And yes, Cliff asked me to.

But somehow all that wasn’t enough. My real satisfaction was seeing the impact A Better Society was having– bringing people together to help build a better society.

Through this one day event, we brought more awareness around Alzheimer’s Disease and raised more than $2,100 to the cause.
We connected 24 individuals from all walks of life together into one team.
We biked and ran for 750 miles.
We helped build a better society – one mile at a time.

Thank you to all the participants, sponsors, and coordinators!

We’ve already set our goals for next year’s event. Of course, it’ll be bigger and better.
